EXPATRIATE
This word of the day is more for spelling than definition. It’s a tricky one because it’s easy to get confused with ‘patriot’ or just forget the ‘e’ at the end.
Anyway, Pete and I watched ‘Casablanca‘ tonight before ‘Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest.’ Rick, played by Humphrey Bogart, is an expatriate, like many of the foreigners in Casablanca. Although the Europeans plan on just staying there until they can get visas, many of them stay longer because the documents are hard to come by.
Merriam-Webster adds that an expatriate withdraws allegiance from his/her native country. In this case, is Rick an expatriate? I’m not quite sure what his views of America were. I think he explained it, but my growing excitement for the New Year countdown (and my first glass of champagne) kept me from playing full attention to the film.
Nevertheless, I think Pete and I started a nice New Year’s Eve tradition with ‘Casablanca.’
